What is TURP?

1. Transurethral surgery of the prostate is usually performed with the use of a general or spinal anesthetic. As the name indicates, it is performed by visualising the prostate through the urethra and removing tissue by electrocautery or sharp dissection.

2. During transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), an instrument called resectoscope is inserted up the urethra to remove the section of the prostate that is blocking urine flow .Then, the urinary tract will be enlarged and the patients’urination will be facilitated.

3. Transurethral resection of prostate is the mainstay of treatment for voiding problems due to benign prostatic hyperplasia(BPH)，and it is generally accepted as the gold standard internationally. Compared with the open prostatectomy, TURP was introduced as a method of treatment that was less invasive. During this operation, patients suffer less pain, loss less blood. Meanwhile, patients’ recovery is much quicker. Most patients undergoing this operation will be discharged in one week in our hospital.

Postoperative announcements:

1. Following surgery, a catheter is used to remove blood or blood clots in the bladder that may result from the procedure. Our nurse will give you continuous bladder irrigation.If you find your catheter is blocked,tell our nurse quickly. You'll probably need a urinary catheter for one week.

2. Expect some blood or small blood clots in your urine afterward. It is a normal phenomenon. Please don’t be nerverous!

3. Please drink more water than usual after the operation.

4. Symptoms such as frequent urination and little leakage of urine will continue for a while because of irritation caused by the surgery. It is also a normal phenomenon.

5. At first, you may have hematuria as urine passes over the surgical area. This gradually improves over one to four weeks.

6. Preventing constipation! If you have dry stool, please take some laxative medicine and eat more vegetables and fruit.

7. Please take a rest for two weeks at home after your discharge. During this period, strenuous activity, constipation, and sexual activity should be avoided.
