Occupational Disease Department has been the most characteristic clinical unit in Peking University Third Hospital, one of the clinical units with longest history and the important member of Natioanl and Beijing Municipal Committee for diagnosis of occupational disease, and the national training basis for senior physicians in occupational disease field, enjoyed high reputation inside and outside of China. Now, we are the national clinical key specialist departments, Beijing Occupational Health Examination Medical Quality Management and Control Center, and the Occupational Disease Clinical Base of Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention. At 2013, we established the Occupational Disease Branch of Beijing Medical Association.

The predecessor of Occupational Disease Dept. was a specialty group of occupational disease affiliated to Internal Medicine Dept., established in 1959 by Prof. Wang Shijun, a famous expert in internal medicine, which then reformed to Dept. of Occupational Disease in 1972 and setted up a laboratory for study of occupational disease. In 1985, the department developed to the Research Center of Occupational Medicine with the establishment of Beijing Medical University (BMU), consisted of Clinical Division (Occupational Disease Department) and Research Division (Laboratories), became one of the “First Ten Research Centers in BMU” and a unique Doctorate Cultivating Spot in occupational disease field and a famous science organization that jointed clinic, teaching and study on occupational medicine.

With 60 years of development, the Department of Occupational Diseases has always been based on its own position, serving the society and providing high-level and high-quality medical services for the prevention and treatment of occupational diseases in China and Beijing. In addition to undertaking the diagnosis and treatment of occupational diseases in out-patients and inpatients in our hospital, it is also responsible for the rescue and consultation of acute and severe occupational diseases in Beijing and other parts of the country, as well as the diagnosis and identification of difficult occupational diseases and the identification of the degree of disability caused by occupational diseases. Not only has special occupational medicine, Peking University third hospital, and from hospital built a start in ophthalmology, dermatology, otolaryngology, dental and radiology department main clinical departments such as configuration professional personnel and equipment for special occupational harm to provide professional services, make the founding become across the country, the research and one of the few, to provide high level involves interdisciplinary range of occupational disease diagnosis, treatment and health care service of medical units. In 1996, approved by Beijing Medical University, the Department of Occupational Diseases established an allergy clinic on the basis of the original immune group, and its business scope was extended to other immunological diseases including autoimmune diseases. In 1999, the "chemical poisoning clinic" was first set up in China, and the pneumoconiosis specialty added the environmental lung disease clinic, which included lung damage caused by environmental pollutants into the diagnosis and treatment scope. In addition, we are good at discovering problems, sum up experience in clinical practice, and gradually develop the occupational disease prevention and control of quality management research, formulated or revised "law on the prevention and control of occupational diseases and so on in the country in the process of the occupational health laws and regulations, the administrative department of public health for conform to the actual law of occupational disease prevention and control system of scientific suggestions and opinions.

In the past 60 years, the Department of Occupational Diseases has made great achievements in the research on pneumoconiosis, poisoning, occupational asthma and other aspects. It has published more than 500 research papers, more than 10 monographs, and won more than 10 national and provincial awards successively. As an important clinical teaching hospital in China, we have been undertaking the training of senior professional talents such as undergraduates, trainees, advanced doctors and postgraduates. We have held more than 20 state-level continuing teaching and training sessions, and are the most influential professional training base for occupational diseases in China.
