Professor WANG Shi-jun, the founder of the department of occupational disease of Peking University Third Hospital, is one of the most famous experts on occupational medicine in China. He graduated from the medical college of Peking University in 1946, and was immediately asked to work in neurology department of the affiliated hospital as the resident. Then he transfered to Zhong-he Hospital (the predecessor of Ren-min Hospital of Peking University) in Peping and served successively as resident, attending physician and associate director of the department of internal medicine there. In 1958, he was transfered to the newly established third affiliated hospital as associate director of Internal Medicine Dept. of that hospital. In 1959, he started to organize the speciality group of occupational disease affiliated to Internal Medicine Dept. which was reformed to Dept.of Occupational Disease in 1972.In 1961, he took the lead in offering a new course : “Occupational Diseases”, since then “Occupational Diseases”was formally listed as a college subject in China. During his 40 and more year busy time, uncountable critically ill patients were identified and saved by Prof. Wang; meanwhile, thousands of graduates,postgraduates, senior physicians for advanced course were cultivated under his instruction.
He was the first group of tutors for postgraduates, especially for those of the doctorates in China. He ever took a lot of acadamic concurrent posts such as the Prisident of Division for Labour Hygiene and Occupational Diseases of the National Technique Committee for Hygienic Standards, Ministry of Public Health; the Standing Committee Member of the Society of Labour Hygiene and Occupational Diseases, Chinese Medical Association; President of Beijing Branch, the Society of Labour Hygiene and Occupational Diseases, Chinese Medical Association; Head of the Division of Occupational Diseases, Society of Labour Hygiene and Occupational Diseases, Chinese Medical Association; Honorary Prisident of Society of Occupational Diseases, Chinese Preventive Medicine Association, subeditor of the “Chinese Journal of Industrial Hygiene and Occupational Diseases” etc.He also published many monographs such as 〈Metal Poisoning〉,〈Industrial Hygiene and Occupational Diseases〉,〈Clinical Occupational Diseases〉etc. all were welcome by the professional public, that made a significant contribution to the progress and development on occupational disease academic field. In 1990, he was issued the special subsidy from the State Council of China as an award for his outstanding work in teaching and medical field, then he was also awarded “The Best Doctor Prize of Beijing Medical University” and “The Best Teacher Prize of Beijing Medical University ” in 1992 and 1995, respectively.
