Department Introduction

Occupational Disease Department has been the most characteristic clinical unit in the Third Hospital of Peking University, one of the clinical units with longest history and the important member of Natioanl and Beijing Municipal Committee for diagnosis of occupational disease, and the national training basis for senior physicians in occupational disease field, enjoyed high reputation inside and outside of China.

The predecessor of Occupatioanl Disease Dept. was a speciality group of occupational disease affiliated to Internal Medicine Dept., established in 1959 by Prof. Wang Shi-jun, a famous expert in internal medicine, which then reformed to Dept. of Occupational Disease in 1972 and setted up a laboratory for study of occupational disease. In 1985, the department developed to the Research Center of Occupational Medicine with the establishment of Beijing Medical University (BMU), consisted of Clinical Division (Occupational Disease Department) and Research Division (Laboratories), became one of the “First Ten Research Centers in BMU” and a unique

Doctorate Cultivating Spot in occupational disease field and a famous science organization that jointed clinic, teaching and study on occupational medicine.

The main research fields involved by the department are various poisoning, peumoconiosis and chemical allergic diseases. Except the routine work for outpatients and inpatients, the department also takes up the tasks of rescuing, consultation, diagnosis, identification for the emergent, dangerous and difficult cases of occupational diseases all over China. The department has collected a group of famous scholars in occupational medicine, such as Prof. Wang Shi-jun, Prof. Shi Zhi-cheng, Prof. Liu Jing-yu, Prof. Zhao Jin-yuan, Prof. Xu xi-xian etc. they have made distinguished achievement in metal poisoning, toxic nephropathy, functional diagnosis for peumoconiosis, occupational asthma etc. and occupied important posts in natioanl academic societies and publications.

Since1998, the department has gradually extended its medical service bound on the basis of its professional features and academic specialities. For example, the poisoning speciality group has expanded their focus from simple industrial toxins to all chemicals, including drugs, agricultural chemicals, environmental toxins, daily chemicals, toxic animals and plants, narcotics, military chemicals etc. and first set up a special out-patient clinic for “chemical poisoning” in China, which particularly could offer a detect service for infrequent toxins (such as organic phosphorus, organic chlorine, tetramine, thallium, rare metals, earth elements and various unkown toxins ) in various samples ( blood, urine, liquid, power etc.), that contributed greatly convenience for patients and filled up a gap of medical service in China. The peumoconiosis group setted up a new out-patient clinic service for lung diseases by environmental factors such as smoking, environmental pollutants etc., while the chemical allergy group also expanded their medical service to allergic rhinitis and other allergic diseases. All of these offered necessary convenience for patients and were greatly welcome by the patients.

As the best and most influenced training center for occupational medicine in China, the department has cultivated more than 1000 graduates, near 30 postgraduates, more than 40 research fellows in recent 40 years; more than 1000 senior profesionals were trained through the advanced course by the professors of the department. The research Center of Occupational Medicine has assumed 30 and more important scientific research items includind national, provincial, ministrial items even joint projects with foreign countries, including 6 grants from natioanl natural science funds, 4 doctorate training spot funds of Education Ministry. More than 500 articles and ten or more monographs were published from the professors of the department; additinally, they got more than 10 national or ministrial prizes in past several decades; recent 5 years they continuously got one Third-grade Prize of Beijing Municipal Science-Technology Progress Prize, three Second-grade Prizes of Chinese Medical Science- Technology Prize and one Second-grade Prize of National Science-Technology Progress Prize of China.

Meanwhile, the Third Hospital of Peking University has established a series clinical services for occupational damages on eye, skin, five senses, oral cavity etc., the Ophthalmology Dept., Dermatology Dept., ENT Dept. Stomatology Dept and Radiology Dept. etc. all could offer best facilities and specialists for the diagnosis, therapy, identification and monitoring of occupational hazards. Since 2003, the Third Hospital of Peking University qualified as a legal medical organization for diagnosis and monitoring for occupational hazards, that makes all the involved work more standardized and the Third Hospital of Peking University could do better to serve the labourers.
