The urology department of Peking University Third Hospital was established in 1958. With nearly half a century of vigorous development, it has developed to be a comprehensive department integrating clinics, research and teaching as an organic whole, which has great impact in the country. As one of the main components in the surgical system of PUTH, our department completes more than 2000 operations every year, and now is one of the college State-level key disciplines
Since the 1950s, the urology department has taken the lead in advanced clinical research and high difficulty surgeries of urology, especially holding outstanding achievements in the radical resection of urinary neoplasm and the diagnosis and treatment of male infertility. We successfully completed difficult urological surgeries such as ileal/colonic bladder substitution, radical nephrectomy of huge renal carcinoma and excision of retroperitoneal mass and accumulated a great deal of clinical experience. Moreover, we took the lead in the Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (EWSL), transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TUR-BT) and transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR-P) in the 1980s.
Recently, we actively carried out new minimally invasive technologies such as urological laparoscope, endoscopic surgery, and gradually formed a centre of minimally invasive treatment with the characteristics of laparoscopic live donor nephrectomy, radical nephrectomy, radical prostatectomy, total cystectomy and urinary reconstruction, as well as percutaneous echoscope and ureteroscopy.
With the domestic leading position in the organ transplantation, the department has engaged in training a large number of organ transplant professionals over the years, which are skilled in renal transplant operations independently, and good at medication management in postoperative patients, and often go to other hospitals to give lectures. In 2001, we successfully operated the first radioactive seed implantation to treat prostate cancer under the guidance of three-dimensional ultra sonogram treatment planning system, which is the first case in China. In recent years, transurethral ureteroscopy and percutaneous nephroscope to treat urinary stones and urinary neoplasm have also made rapid development, which reached the domestic first-class level, propelling the minimally invasive surgery in urology a great step forward. In 2002, since the purchase of Germany Wiest urodynamics detector, the department can complete successfully urinary dynamic inspection of various diseases and precise measurement of various parameters of urine, guiding the clinical treatment effectively. In addition, the use of biosynthetic technology, minimally invasive treatment by suspension for female urinary incontinence has also made good results.
Today, as one of domestic first-class ranks of clinical departments, the department includes several professional groups such as general urology, minimally invasive urology, organ transplantation, male reproductive medicine, urinary and reproductive system neoplasm and urinary stones, covering a wide range of disciplines with the strong overall strength. In the near future, with the tireless efforts of colleagues, our department will certainly be still vigorous, and eventually become an internationally advanced clinical urology department.
