A Delegation Led by Fu Wei, President of Peking University Third Hospital, Visits Mauritius 

to Promote China-Africa Pairing-up Hospital Cooperation

To implement the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping's important speech at the 73rd World Health Assembly and advance the construction of the "30 China-Africa Sister Hospitals" cooperation mechanism, a delegation led by the Peking University Health Science Center and including Fu Wei, President of Peking University Third Hospital, and other experts, visited Mauritius from September 26 to 29, 2023. This visit, initiated at the invitation of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Mauritius, aimed to conduct on-site research and actively promote the deepening of cooperation between both parties.


In 2020, under the support and coordination of the Health Science Center, Peking University Third Hospital established a sister hospital support and cooperation relationship with Victoria Hospital in Mauritius. Over the past three years, the two hospitals have communicated and understood each other through various means such as online meetings and emails, and have preliminarily determined the direction of their cooperation.


During their stay in Mauritius, the delegation held a discussion meeting with the Minister of Health of Mauritius, Dr. Jagutpal. Minister Jagutpal fully acknowledged the strength of Peking University Medicine and Peking University Third Hospital, expressing full support for the implementation of this project. Zhu Liying, the Chinese Ambassador to Mauritius, stated that the sister hospital cooperation between Peking University Third Hospital and Victoria Hospital is a model of mutual benefit in China-Africa medical cooperation. 2023 marks the 51st anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Mauritius. This cooperation will open a new chapter in the friendship between the two countries.


Following their visit to the Ministry of Health, the delegation was invited to the Chinese Embassy in Mauritius for a working meeting with Ambassador Zhu Liying and Commercial Counsellor Qu Ying. Sun Qiudan, Director of the International Cooperation Department of Peking University Health Science Center, and Fu Wei, President of Peking University Third Hospital, reported on the preliminary preparations of the cooperation project. Ambassador Zhu Liying and Counsellor Qu Ying emphasized the importance of the cooperation again, stating that the embassy will continue to support and promote the implementation of the cooperation project as soon as possible, expanding the medical collaboration between the two countries.

On September 28, the delegation visited Victoria Hospital for an on-site survey. During the meeting, President Fu Wei expressed his hope to establish a long-term and stable cooperation mechanism with Victoria Hospital, gradually enhancing the medical and health service capabilities of the sister hospital. Experts from Peking University Third Hospital introduced the departments intended for cooperation and the specific content of the proposed joint project. After the meeting, the delegation toured Victoria Hospital and engaged in in-depth exchanges with local medical staff, also visiting Nushad, a clinical medicine student from Peking University Health Science Center's class of 1999 from Mauritius. The visit aimed to further enhance mutual understanding, clarify the actual needs of Victoria Hospital, and establish contact methods for the proposed cooperative departments.

At the summary meeting at the Ministry of Health of Mauritius on the 28th, Dr. B.Ori, the Director-General of Health Services, appreciated the delegation's on-site survey at Victoria Hospital and the specific cooperation efforts over the two days, looking forward to the rapid implementation of the cooperation project. Prof. Qiao Jie, the Executive Vice President of Peking University and Director of the Health Science Center, expressed her optimism and confidence in the cooperation through a video message.

During the on-site survey in Mauritius, coinciding with the Mid-Autumn Festival and the eve of the National Day, the delegation attended a reception on the evening of the 28th celebrating the 74th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, hosted by the Chinese Embassy in Mauritius. Ambassador Zhu Liying specially introduced the Peking University Medicine delegation to Prime Minister Jugnauth during his speech. The Prime Minister engaged in a cordial conversation with President Fu Wei and experts from Peking University Third Hospital, highly appreciating the pragmatic cooperation in the medical and health field between the two countries.
