Founded in 1958, Peking University Third Hospital (PUTH) is a general tertiary hospital under the supervision of the National Health Commission, integrating medical care, teaching, research, preventive health care, rehabilitation, and health management. Currently, the hospital has more than 2,300 open beds.
In March 2022, the hospital was selected as one of the 14 pilot hospitals nationwide for high-quality development among public hospitals. In the National Tertiary Public Hospital Performance Evaluation, it has consecutively received an A++ rating for five years. It ranked sixth in the 2019-2023 "Accumulative Science and Technology Evaluation Metrics (ASTEM) Ranking of Chinese Hospitals Over Five Years."
Over the years, the volume and efficiency of medical services of PUTH have always been among the top in Beijing. Currently, the hospital serves more than 5 million outpatient emergencies and more than 170,000 inpatient admissions annually, completes more than 100,000 surgeries annually, with an average length of stay at 4.44 days per patient. The average hospitalization day is always at the best level of general hospitals in China.
PUTH boasts one academician from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, two academicians from the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and eight recipients of the National Natural Science Foundation of China's Outstanding Young Scholar Fund. As a tertiary comprehensive hospital with distinct multidisciplinary characteristics and significant advantages, PUTH's Spine Surgery Discipline is the best in China; its Reproductive Medicine Center offers the most comprehensive treatment methods and is one of the largest centers internationally, where the first test-tube baby in mainland China was born; the Institute of Sports Medicine is the earliest established and the only athlete injury prevention and treatment center designated by the Chinese Olympic Committee; Ophthalmology ranks among the top in China in ocular trauma, corneal transplantation, cataract, and glaucoma; Gastroenterology leads the country in the research and treatment of peptic ulcer pathogenesis and the diagnosis and treatment of early gastric cancer; Cardiology excels in interventional treatment of coronary heart disease, cardiac rehabilitation, and coordinated clinical and basic cardiovascular development; Plastic Surgery and Occupational Health Departments are pioneering clinical specialties in China.

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology serves as the National Clinical Research Center for Obstetrics and Gynecology Diseases. Obstetrics and Rehabilitation Departments are respectively the National Medical Quality Control Center for Obstetrics and Rehabilitation. The Reproductive Medicine Department is the leading unit of the National Expert Group for Quality Management of Assisted Reproductive Technology. In 2023, PUTH was selected as a pilot unit for the "Flagship" Hospital Initiative in Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, jointly evaluated by the National Development and Reform Commission, the National Health Commission, and the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Relying on national clinical key specialty construction projects, PUTH has established multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment centers and discipline clusters to promote interdisciplinary integration.
As the teaching hospital of Peking University, the hospital consistently adheres to the fundamental purpose of "cultivating people by virtue" and continuously improves its clinical teaching and training system. In 2021, the Education and Teaching Center of PUTH was established to further deepen the reform of medical education and teaching. PUTH attaches great importance to undergraduate education, and relevant courses have been selected as high-quality undergraduate courses in Beijing universities. Its teaching achievements have won the first prize of the National Teaching Achievement Award for Higher Education (Undergraduate) in 2022. Every year, the hospital undertakes the teaching and training management of over 700 undergraduates, over 700 graduate students, nearly 300 standardized training residents, and more than 1,800 continuing education physicians/nurses. It is responsible for the management of multidisciplinary undergraduate medical education, mainly in the eight-year clinical medicine program, and oversees 32 doctoral degree training programs and 34 master's degree training programs across the hospital. The hospital boasts 20 specialized bases for standardized training of residents in Beijing, 3 key specialized bases for national standardized training of residents, and 3 specialized training bases for standardized training of specialists approved by the National Health Commission. Every year, it accepts a total of nearly 2,000 students for various continuing education programs.
PUTH has always adhered to the scientific and technological innovation guided by clinical problems. In recent years, the hospital has successively implemented several major initiatives to activate the vitality of scientific and technological innovation. It established the Medical Innovation Research Institute to create a new system for medical innovation research and transformation. Leveraging its geographical advantages, the hospital took the lead in establishing the Beijing Xueyuan Road Clinical Medicine Collaborative Innovation Alliance to continuously promote the coordinated development of industry, academia, and research. The number of scientific research projects approved and the amount of funding have increased year by year, with the number of projects approved by the National Natural Science Foundation of China ranking first among local hospitals in Beijing and consecutively ranking first among the departments and schools of Peking University. The hospital has also established a cross-disciplinary special fund to promote cross-disciplinary projects. As the only medical institution, it was approved for the first batch of industrial development research institute construction projects in Beijing.
PUTH boasts three innovation teams of Ministry of Education: Orthopedics, Sports Medicine Research Institute, and Obstetrics and Gynecology. It is home to two national key laboratories: Female Fertility Promotion and Vascular Homeostasis and Remodeling. The hospital also houses one National Clinical Research Center for Obstetric Diseases, one Ministry of Education Key Laboratory for Assisted Reproduction, and two Ministry of Education Engineering Research Centers: Precision Medicine for Bone and Joints, and Sports Injury Treatment Technology and Equipment. Additionally, it features a National Health Commission Key Laboratory for Cardiovascular Molecular Biology and Regulatory Peptides.

Deepening the development of the "smart hospital" and Internet hospital, the hospital offers high-quality, convenient, and warm medical services. It emphasizes humanistic care, caring for the elderly, and addressing rare diseases. In 2023, the International Medical Department officially commenced operations, with outpatient and inpatient services coming online, a special evening outpatient clinic opening, and a hotline service center being established.
The hospital actively explores new pathways for high-quality medical resource distribution and has consistently ranked among the top in Beijing's healthcare consortium comprehensive evaluations for several years. Dedicated to creating a distinctive "single institution with multiple hospitals" development model, the second outpatient department, Central Party School hospital, Capital Airport hospital, and Northern hospital are all progressing well. The hospital manages two district hospitals in Haidian and Yanqing, supporting the development of the capital's healthcare sector. It also oversees the Yan'an Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, supporting the revolutionary old area, and is developing the Chongli hospital and Qinhuangdao hospital as two national regional medical centers, practicing the coordinated development strategy of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei.
The hospital steadfastly upholds the public welfare nature of public hospitals, bearing the responsibility of the "national team.” The footprints of the hospital staff can be found from the snowy plateaus and African continent to earthquake disaster areas and pandemic frontlines. In 2022, the main hospital dispatched five teams, comprising nearly 200 personnel, to provide medical support for the Beijing Winter Olympics and Paralympics. Both the hospital and its Chongli hospital were honored with the "Outstanding Contribution Group" award for the Beijing Winter Olympics and Paralympics, recognized by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council. Yanqing Hospital was awarded the "2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and Paralympics Advanced Group" by Beijing.
During the three-year fight against COVID-19, our hospital mobilized medical workers to assist Wuhan, Changchun, and Lhasa and other places, completing multiple support missions. In 2020, 137 doctors and nurses were dispatched to protect Hu Bei from epidemic prevention and control, as part of the national medical team. This effort earned them titles such as "National Advanced Group in Fighting COVID-19" and "Role Model of the Times." At the end of 2022 and the beginning of 2023, the number of patients in the emergency and fever clinics surged. The hospital swiftly and extensively established respiratory intensive care and sub-intensive care units to ensure the treatment of critical and sub-critical patients. The hospital staff faced unprecedented challenges and hardships with courage and determination, overcoming significant obstacles.
