The Department of Respiratory Medicine of Peking University Third Hospital (PUTH) was established in 1977. In the early 1980s, Prof. Zhao Mingwu first carried out the examination of bronchoscopy, which made us became one of the leading hospital in China. After that, we gradually established the lung function test lab, the respiratory lab, the sleep study and the respiratory intensive care unit. Now we provide comprehensive clinical care for a full range of pulmonary conditions and diseases in both an inpatient and outpatient setting. Our department contains 2 clinical wards (including RICU), with 44 beds. There are 23 doctors in our department, including 5 chief physicians (Prof. Zhao Mingwu, Prof. Yao Wanzhen, Prof. He Bei, Prof. Zhu Hong, and Prof. Zhang Liqiang), 6 associate chief physicians, 8 attending doctors and 4 residents.
Clinical interests of our physicians include:
· Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
· Interstitial lung disease
· Acute/chronic lung infection
· Acute lung injury/Acute respiratory failure/Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)
· Occupational and environmental lung disease
· Pulmonary vascular disease/ Pulmonary embolism/ Pulmonary hypertension
· Sleep apnea/ sleep disordered breathing
· Pulmonary rehabilitation
Special tests and procedures available include:
· Bronchoscopy (including the endobronchial ultrasound, EBUS)
· Methacholine challenge testing
· Pulmonary function assessment
The Unit maintains both clinical and basic science research laboratories. Major areas of research include:
· Lung cellular and molecular biology
· Chronic airway inflammation
· Infection and antibiotic resistant
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
Overview
COPD is a major cause of ill health in China affecting 8.2% people aged more than 40. Peking University Third Hospital offers a national class, multidisciplinary service both to patients in the local community and to patients from all over the country referred to the advanced COPD service.
We have expertise in non-invasive ventilation (NIV),invasive ventilation, and interventional bronchoscopy, as well as the systemic manifestations, epidemiology and basic disease mechanisms of COPD.
COPD Clinic: Thursday afternoon 1:30pm-4:30pm
This service is a weekly ‘Advanced COPD clinic’ provides assessment and optimum clinical management.
Self management strategies including inhaler technique and recognizing exacerbations are emphasised.
The COPD service provides access to lung function, CT scanning, pulmonary rehabilitation, smoking cessation, sleep studies and palliative care.
