General Introduction

The Biobank of Peking University Third Hospital was established in June 2016. Under the hospital's robust support, the Biobank has assembled a highly qualified team of 11 scientific researchers and techniciansamong which 8 hold doctoral or master's degrees in medical and related biological fields.

The Biobank has successfully implemented a rigorous and standardized system for the collection, storage, and management of samples. Its current infrastructure includes 15 deep-temperature refrigerators, 2 substantial gas-phase liquid nitrogen tanks, and 7 compact, portable liquid nitrogen transport tanks, collectively capable of accommodating the storage needs of a diverse range of body fluid and tissue samples. The storage capacity for biological samples is impressive, accommodating not less than 1 million samples. Moreover, the Biobank is equipped with a sophisticated temperature monitoring system and a comprehensive biological sample database information management system. These systems ensure the meticulous quality control of the biological samples, thereby safeguarding the integrity and reliability of the research conducted at the Biobank.

The Biobank is intricately aligned with the progression of diverse clinical medical disciplines, dedicated to the preservation of human genetic resources centered around pivotal research topics related to human diseases for scientific purposes. It has been authorized to preserve human genetic resources in China, as evidenced by the approval granted by the National Heritage Office (Approval Number: [2021]BC0053), ensuring the lawful preservation of samples. In strict adherence to national ethical laws and regulations, the Biobank procures informed consent from the providers of human genetic resources materials beforehand, enabling the collection and preservation of human genetic materials such as blood, body fluids, tissues, and cellular specimens derived from both normal and diseased states after clinical diagnosis and treatment, along with data generated from human genetic resources materials. By adhering rigorously to China's technical standards for the preservation of human genetic resources, formulating quality control standards for scientific, standardized, and secure management, establishing standardized repositories for human genetic resources and modern technology platforms, the Biobank actively supports in-depth basic and clinical research endeavors on diseases.

Since the inception of the Biobank, a comprehensive total of 65 projects have been interconnected, encompassing 17 clinical departments within the hospital, spanning gynecology, obstetrics, sports medicine, orthopedics, cardiology, respiratory, etc. The volume of clinical samples has consistently doubled each year. Currently, the Biobank houses a diverse collection of 95 types of samples. To cater more effectively to the needs of clinical departments, the platform has devised personalized treatment and storage plans tailored to unique clinical samples. Additionally, it has established standardized protocols for ascites sample processing, cfDNA extraction, body fluid sample identification, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid treatment, flow detection, etc.  Furthermore, the platform offers data mining of biological information based on clinical samples. In accordance with the objective of fostering the concurrent development of dry storage, wet storage, and live storage (organoids), and constructing a robust sample science system, the biobank undertakes comprehensive, whole-chain teaching, scientific research, and service endeavors centered on samples for the entire hospital.
