On March 6th, the department of radiation oncology, radiological department, and department of anesthesiology, E.N.T. department and operating room worked together and cured a palindromia head and nick sarcoma of children successfully.
The patient is an 11-year-old boy, who came to PUTH after several relapses in spite of many times of chemotherapy of the right-sided facial sarcoma. With no chance of an operation, the department of radiation oncology and other department planned to implement a CT guided radioactive particles therapy. Because of the depth of the tumor invasion as well as side effects of radio theory, the patient had difficulty in opening mouth, which made oral insertion impossible and made nasal insertion difficult. The fact that many important organs are on the face added the difficulty and complexity of all possible to preoperative anesthesia, intraoperative puncture and particle implantation.
A rigorous treatment plan was made after a full discussion among several departments. Department of anesthesiology decided to implement a general anesthesia by a nasal insertion. E.N.T. department was to provide technical support in case of airway obstruction. Operating room would prepare relative equipment. Radiological department and the Department of radiation oncology carried out active particles implantation. The operation lasted for two hours. The active particles were well distributed and metrological certification met the qualification brought up before the operation. The patient was taken back to his ward safely and has left hospital now.
The success of curing the patient shows the great strength of several departments of PUTH and the fine tradition of collaboration between several departments and it wins praise of patient’s family.
