Academic research in the Department of Endocrinology starts from clinical issues and is guided by translational medicine. The major research directions include stem cell differentiation, basic and clinical research on pancreatic β-cells and endothelial dysfunction, basic clinical translational research on diabetes, pre-diabetes, thyroid disorders, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, metabolic syndrome, and other metabolic diseases. The department has been responsible for more than 70 national, provincial or ministerial projects, including the National Key Research and Development Program of China, the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), the National Program on Key Basic Research Project of China (973 Program), the National High-tech R＆D Program of China (863 Program), the National Key Technology Research and Development Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, the Program of Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission, the Beijing Municipal Natural Science Foundation, the Ph.D. Programs Foundation of Ministry of Education of China, the Ministry of Health's scientific research projects, China Medical Board (New York). Members of the department have been awarded more than 2 NSFCs per year for 7 years (cumulative 11 years) and were awarded 5 General Program of National Natural Science Foundation of China in 2023. So far, 37 NSFCs have been awarded to the department. The department has published more than 300 academic papers in domestic and international core journals, among which, more than 80 papers were SCI journals.
