In the year of 1958, Peking University Third Hospital(PKUTH) Radiology Department was founded by Prof. Guozhen Li when the hospital was first built. After 60 years’development, having had Prof. Guozhen Li, Prof. Gengnian Liu, Prof. Jingxia Xie, Prof. Xuan Li, and Prof. Huishu Yuan as chiefs, the department now is equipped with advanced facilities and comprehensive sub-specialties. The clinical service, teaching, research, and development of the sub-specialties are progressing in a coordinated way.

Up to now, the department has 198 members, including 52 diagnostic faculty members, 113 technicians, 12 nurses, 17 registrar, and 4 engineers and secretaries . Among the above, there are 10 members have advanced professional qualification and 15 members have associate advanced professional qualification.90% of the diagnostic faculty have doctoral degree. 6 of the technicians have master degree.

In terms of the hardware, Peking University Third Hospital main campus and the other branch campuses have 14 high-field MRI (1.5T or above), 14 64-slice (or above) CTs, 1 full digital mammography, 1 digital mammography, and 22 digital X-rays in total. We developed PACS and RIS systems that covered the main hospital and all the other branch campuses which allows informationized and digitalized management of imaging data, and self-service printing of the radiology reports and films. Additionally, under the overall arrangement of hospital collectivization, the radiological facilities of the branch campuses are continuously being updated.

Equipped with the advanced hardware platform, the department is able to provide digital X-ray exam, cross-sectional computer tomography, magnetic resonance imaging of the entire body, and a variety of interventional exams and treatment. In the recent 10 years, the number of exams performed increases by 8% each year. In the year of 2019, the total number of diagnostic imaging and interventional treatment reached around 550,000. The department is in a national leading position in the application of multi-slice spiral CT, high-field intensity MR. The service offered includes CT、MR of all functional systems，MR arthrography, and other dedicated exams, which could meet the clinical demands of diagnosing a wide range of illnesses. The department emphasis medical safety and quality management, and is continuously improving the standards of exams and the clinical work flow. In 2014, the department added quality control module to the RIS platform, which realized quality evaluation of all checkpoints throughout the routine clinical work-flow from registration, exam, diagnosing, to reporting. At the same time, the department promotes multidisciplinary cooperation and communication by holding MDT comprehensive diagnosing and treatment planing meetings and joint image reading meetings in the form of joint clinics, such as interventional radiology clinic of pain and tumor, joint-clinic with respiratory department, and joint-clinic with neurology department, etc.. As requested by the patients, the department opened radiology clinic providing radiological consultation service to fullfill the demands for consultation of complex cases and on-site reading.

PKUTH Radiology Department’s master and doctoral program are among the earliest ones in the country. Till now, nearly 200 students graduated from the department with master or doctor degree. At present, there are several students under training. In addition, the department holds radiology and nuclear medicine courses for Peking University Health Science Center (PKUHSC) on a routine basis, trains dozens of clinical fellows and visiting scholars each year, and became one of the earliest standardized resident training programs in Beijing in the year of 2007. In the year of 2016, the department ranked No.1 among all of the resident training programs in Beijing on the yearly evaluation. From 2012 till now, the department have been holding national advanced conference of comprehensive diagnostic imaging and advanced training course of musculoskeletal imaging each year. Moreover, the department holds multiple continuous education courses of national level and municipal level, which remarkably increased its academic impact.

The department was approved to establish Beijing key laboratory of magnetic resonance imaging equipment and technique in 2011. The department take responsibility for nearly 100 research programs supported by the National Science and Technology Support Program of the 12th five year plan,the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, the Chinese National Natural Science Foundation, the National Key Research and Development Project, the National 863 Project of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the National 985 Project of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Capital Medical Development and Research Foundation of Beijing, the Beijing Natural Science Foundation, and the Capital Clinical Medicine Special Application Research Project of Beijing Science and Technology Commission, etc.. The department achieved multiple significant honors, such as Science and Technology Achievement Award of the Ministry of Education, Chinese Medical Science Prize, and many research patents.

The department published more than 550 research papers on national and international journals, among which more than 90 papers were published on SCI、EI indexed journals. Also, the department published a number of monographs and translations. Tens person-time attended international or national well-known conferences and gave speech, such as the Annual Meeting of Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), the European Congress of Radiology (ECR), the Annual Meeting of International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM), the Annual Meeting of Chinese Society of Radiology.

Many experts of the department hold significant positions in national academic organizations. The administration chief of the department and the academic leader, Prof. Huishu Yuan, is a member of the standing committee of the Chinese Society of Radiology, the chairman of Musculoskeletal Imaging Professional Committee, the deputy chair of the Beijing Society of Radiology, a member of the standing committee of the Beijing Medical Doctor Association Radiology Branch. She is in the editorial board of multiple core journals, such as the Chinese Journal of Radiology and the Chinese Journal of Medical Imaging Technology. She is the chief editor of the musculoskeletal imaging chapter of the Journal of Clinical Radiology. She was honored the Second Science and Technology Achievement Award of the Ministry of Education for her academic accomplishment.

Prof. Hongbin Han, who is the director of the Office of Research Affairs of Peking University Health Science Center (PKUHSC) and the chairman of the MRI Equipment and Technology Branch of the Chinese Association of Medical Equipment, was supported by the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, obtained a number a patents, and was honored for multiple academic prizes on the national level and provincial or ministry level including the Chinese Youth Science and Technology Award.

Prof. Jianyu Liu, is a member of Chinese Society of Radiology Abdominal Imaging Branch Committee, a member of Chinese Association of Medical Imaging Technology and the Abdominal Imaging Branch Committee. She served as the invited reviewer and expert reviewer for multiple journals, such as the Chinese Journal of Radiology, the Chinese Medical Journal English.

In addition, many other faculty members of the department holds significant positions in major national academic organizations.

To further develop the radiology specialty, Prof. Huishu Yuan has led a deep reform in the department. She divided the diagnostic team into groups according to sub-specialties, which optimized the structure of the specialty. Now the department has 5 groups, including musculoskeletal imaging team, abdominal imaging team, chest and vascular imaging team, neurological/head and neck imaging team, and interventional radiology team. All sub-specialties progress in a harmonized way. Supported by the strong platform of the hospital, the musculoskeletal imaging group has been continuously making innovations, and is in a well-established leading position nation wide.
